Austin Michael Salyer, 20, of Highland Village, Texas, passed away when struck by negligent gunfire as he slept in his bed in San Marcos, Texas on Thursday, September 16, 2021.  Austin was born on December 21, 2000, in Grapevine, Texas to his parents, Rodney and Bonnie Salyer. He was an only child.  Austin was a Junior at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. During his time at college, he became a brother of the Alpha Sigma Phi-Theta lota chapter.  He had taken oath for service in the Army ROTC where he had planned to graduate and commission as an officer in the US Army. After his military service, he planned to become a police officer and then join SWAT, which was his ultimate goal.  He had a strong desire to serve both his country and his community.

In addition to his parents, Rodney and Bonnie Salyer, Austin is survived by his maternal great grandmother, Vivian Calhoun; maternal grandparents, Robert and Trudie Vick; paternal grandparents, Wesley and Sherry Salyer; maternal uncle, Rob Vick and his family; paternal uncle, Derek Salyer and his family; Austin’s beloved cat, Luna; and many other great-uncles, great-aunts, cousins, and friends.

Austin was a wonderful, fun-loving young man who had a zest for life. The world has lost a gentle, smiling soul. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00PM, Sunday, September 26, 2021 in the Chapel at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home, 740 S Edmonds Lane, Lewisville, TX 75067, (972) 436-4581.

Immediately following will be a Celebration of Life at Doubletree Ranch Park, 310 Highland Village Road, Highland Village, TX 75077.

Family preference is, if possible, that everyone come to his service dressed in a way that represents their primary connection with Austin while being as informal and comfortable as possible.
